The People:
Carpathians: Commonly called Vampires. Carpathians are and ancient race of people, they are the basis for the legend of Dracula or rather thier fallen kin are. Carpathians are both born and made. They require some blood for life but do not need to harm let alone kill to get it. It is in fact forbidden to kill for blood.
Once past puberty a Carpathian male begins to lose his sense of color, over the centuries they will lose all color sight. Only finding thier one true lifemate reverses this condition. A lifemate can be a Carpathian female (whom are very rare), or a psychic human female who can be turned to Carpathian. In theory a Carpathian females lifemate could be a human male as well though that has not happened in the last several centuries.
Upon meeting that one true lifemate color returns in a split second, even if the meeting is one of the minds alone. Carpathians must make thier lifemate thiers, they will go crazy if they can not and they will go crazy if they never find thier lifemate.
These crazy Carpathians are what vampire nightmares are made of. They hunger for destruction and death only, nothing can turn them from this once they have begun the destruction.
An elite force of Hunters, made up of the strongest of Carpathian males, hunt down those who have gone bad, even to the point of killing thier former comrades and relatives. It is a sad business for the Hunters, but one they see as the strictest of duties to protect both human-kind and thier own formerly hidden identities.
To become a Carpathian a human must have psychic abilites. They also must be the lifemate of a Carpathian, no Carpathian in thier right mind would dream of changing someone who was not both for the human would go utterly mad and have to be destroyed. Unfortunately that fact drives some of the rogue vampires to do just that, simply to create more chaos and evil.
To be turned requires 3 exchanges of blood. The carpathian must first take a certain amount of blood from the human, generally about a pint. And then the human must replace that lost blood with an equal amount of the Carpathians blood. The change is horrific when it happens, as the body changes and burn out the no longer need stores of fat and other human bodily fluids that it lo longer needs. Psychic abilites increase dramatically, and new abilities are present and mastered over time.
Carpathian abilites: Shapeshifting- everything from mist to any creature they have studied hard enough. Telepathy- including coersion. Flight in human form can be mastered by older Carpathians. Regeneration.
Carpathian weaknesses: Sunlight, fire, heart destruction. (Total destruction of the heart is the only way to ensure a Carpathian or vampire won't manage to 'resurrect/regenerate')
(these racial profiles may get adjusted minutely as I double check my facts)
